Number of employees going on early retirement halved in four years

The number of employees going on early retirement has decreased significantly in four years, Dr Morgen reported on Friday. The system’s popularity has been greatly reduced, with the number of people taking off on early retirement diminishing by half since 2013, according to figures from National Employment Office, ONEM. During the last year of the Di Rupo government, 13,000 employees went on early retirement as against 6,800 in 2017.

The number of people sent on early retirement as a result of restructuring has also been on the decrease, going from 2,300 in 2013 to 900 last year.

There are currently 75.000 persons on early retirement as against 120.000 in 2011.

The decrease is due mainly to the Government’s policy. Under Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo (Socialist Party, PS), the conditions for early retirement were strengthened. This policy was continued under his successor Charles Michel (MR - Reformist Movement).
