The average Belgian earns 3,329 euros per month before deductions, which is 4% more than last year, according to a survey by the Jobat online employment site. Fringe benefits are also on the increase, it noted.

The average monthly wage is drawn upward by the highest salaries, Jobat stressed. The median wage is rather around 3,000 euros or less.

Each employee has an average of 4.6 fringe benefits, up from 4.4 last year. These include meal cheques, hospitalization insurance, group insurance, and eco-cheques.

The highest salaries are in Brussels, where they average 3,642 euros per month. In Walloon Brabant and Flemish Brabant, the averages are also on the higher side, 3,481 and 3,406 respectively.

"There are many big businesses and organisations in Brussels, such as the European Union. Professionals and public servants are also massively represented there, and their average salaries are higher than those of workers and other employees,” Jobat explained.

Jobat Media and the Ipsos consultancy collected data from 20,000 Belgian workers through an online survey. The respondents, 49% of them men and 51% women, had an average age of 39 years and averaged seven years of service with their current employers.

Thirty-one percent (31%) were high-school graduates, 34% had Bachelor’s degrees and 27% Master’s.
