Public sector leads the field in strikes

Belgium’s public service placed first among sectors with the highest strike rates in 2017, L’Echo newspaper reported on Tuesday, quoting the latest study by the Sociopolitical Research and Information Centre, CRISP. The study, based on figures from the national statistical office, ONSS, showed that the public sector lost a total of 83,890 days to strikes last year. This was 33.9% of the 247,718 days lost to strikes in all sectors, CRISP noted in its latest weekly bulletin.

Manufacturing was the private-sector group with the most strike days: 83,450 days.

Austerity measures in the public sector, including those related to pensions and harmonization plans, account to a large extent for the increasingly higher level of labour protests in the sector.
