Flemish motorways still “jammed” in 2018

Last year, Flemish motorways traffic was up 0.4% on weekdays and 2.3% on weekends in 2018, according to the annual report by the Flemish Traffic Centre (Vlaams Verkeerscentrum). Evening traffic jams in 2018 were just as long as the year before. Morning rush hour, however, was more fluid, with traffic jams culminating a total of 150 km, which is 8 km less than in 2017.

A decrease in "heavy" traffic jams - which were found to have dropped in 2018 -  can be explained by shorter queues in the morning, especially in the second half of the year — probably due to dry weather.

The decline of heavy traffic does not mean, however, that motorways are less congested. Traffic jams last just as long, and even slightly longer.
