Prices in care homes shoot up

Prices in care homes have continued to rise over the last few years. Even though inflation is near zero, they went up by 10.6% between 2011 and 2014. The Economy SPF has calculated that a care home resident paid on average 1,366 euros a month in the first trimester of last year, Le Soir reported on Thursday.

This price varies according to the type of establishment, and the activities and services it offers. It also depends on the region the pensioner lives in. Wallonia has the lowest prices. The monthly average is between 1,160 euros (in public-funded homes) and 1,240 euros (for private homes). In Brussels, prices are higher and the price difference is larger: 1,291 euros for public-funded homes and 1,657 euros for private homes.

Compare these figures to the average legal pension, which was 1,212 euros in 2012.
