Salmonella may have infected up to 225 children in 38 Flemish schools

The Flemish health agency, Vlaams Agentschap Zorg en Gezondheid, has received notification that 225 children from 38 schools in West and East Flanders have been infected by the Salmonella bacteria, it was reported on Monday. The schools all used the same caterer.

Laboratory analyses confirmed that 192 children in 26 schools had been infected by the bacteria. “For the other children, we have strong suspicions that they contracted a similar syndrome,” the Flemish health agency said.

The Federal Agency for Food Chain Security, Afsca, has taken samples from the caterer that supplies the schools to determine the cause of the contamination, but the results are not yet known.
