Home health nurses embezzled more than 2.7 million euros in 2017, according to inspectors of the National Employment Office, ONEM, newspapers from the Mediahuis Group reported on Friday. This amount was almost one million euros more than the 2016 tally and more than half of the fraud detected in the health care sector, the newspapers added.
There were 33 cases in all, mostly involving home-health nurses declaring care that they did not, in fact administer, or inflating the care they gave.
Christian Democratic and Flemish (CD&V) parliamentarian Nathalie Muylle, who obtained the figures, said the fraudsters needed to be severely punished. “Today, the maximum fines amount to 200% of the amount billed,” she said.
