No fewer than 24 million small pieces of plastic have been counted on the coast of the Wadden Sea, north of the Netherlands, by the University of Groningen. They are from a ship’s containers (grounded early January).
Groningen University researchers had developed as early as January a mobile application that allows any volunteer to count pieces of plastic. Some 300 have been reported.
The largest concentration of micro-plastics was discovered on a beach on the island of Schiermonnikoog, located in the Wadden Sea.
Cleaning by a specialized company will begin next week.
