Last Wednesday, the Namur Council Chamber confirmed an arrest warrant valid for a month for a 29-year-old man who was charged with the murder of Anne Polidor, last Friday. She was killed on May 8th, 2003, near Moustier-sur-Sambre railway station (in Jemeppe-sur-Sambre, province of Namur). This forty-something woman, living in Mornimont, had had her throat cut and had been hit on the head with a concrete block as she made her way home after work. Nothing had been stolen from her and she had not been raped. The man was placed under arrest on Friday, eleven years after the fact.
"Back in 2008, he was arrested for attempted rape on the exact spot where the incident had happened". According to the Namur deputy public prosecutor, "He had followed the same MO".
The suspect had been questioned at the time in a preliminary hearing on the 2003 incident, but there was then not enough fingerprint on the concrete block, in one of the two places a hand holding the block would have been," he continued. The investigating judge felt that this was substantial evidence.
The 29-year-old man is currently being detained on charges of sexual assault. "He was sentenced to five years’ probation, in 2007. He was then condemned to thirty months’ imprisonment without remission, in 2009. "His initial suspended sentence has been revoked", explained the deputy prosecutor. He added that the man had killed his grandmother when he was 14. According to the magistrate, even though he is already being detained, the suspect could still be placed under arrest, since his preventive detention would be independent of and unrelated to his previous convictions.
