Electronic surveillance of convicts will be handled by the Communities (French, Flemish,and German- speaking) from the 1st of January. This is due to the 6th State reform. This power was handed over to the federation in 1998.
Electronic surveillance of convicts is going up and up. The possibility of applying it to people in preventative custody and those with short sentences (less than three years) is being seriously considered. Soon, it will also be used as a sentence on its own.
