Belgium appeals against the release of Farid Bamouhammad

The Justice Minister Koen Geens (Flemish Christian Democrats) has appealed against the release of Farid Bamouhammad, who was set free on the 30th of November by the President of the Court of First Instance for health reasons. News of the appeal was revealed by Le Soir on Friday. Minister Geens considers the unilateral request submitted by Farid Bamouhammad invalid, and thinks that the judge who presided over the civil court despite strong opposition on the 16th of January was not competent.

Bamouhammad’s defense replied that an appeal was impossible, as a Royal Decree has been published since.

The Liège Court of Appeal could rule on the case as early as next week.
