Around 99,000 on the spot fines for not stopping at a red light in 2014

Around 99,000 on the spot fines were handed out in Belgium last year for not stopping at a red light. The vice-president of the permanent local police Commission has called for the perpetrators of these serious infractions to be more severely punished. Especially seeing as figures are on the up, the Flemish press reported on Thursday. In 2013, the police gave out 10,000 less fines than last year. The cause of this increase is not known, but the police say it is due to the growing negligence of many drivers. “They drive with their radio on, their telephone in their hand, or are simply distracted, so don’t see that the light has gone red”.
