Two men from Brussels, aged 24 and 45, were arrested in the Brussels region last Thursday on suspicion of recruiting people to fight in Syria. This information, confirmed by the federal Prosecutor’s office, was revealed by La Dernière Heure on Friday. These are the first arrests since the events in France at the beginning of January and the antiterrorist operation in Verviers. The investigating judge charged the younger of the two suspects, but released him on parole. The second remains in custody, and the Council Chamber issued an arrest warrant for him on Wednesday. The inquest must determine how long the presumed recruitment operation had been going on, and how many fighters the suspects had recruited and sent to Iraq or Syria for the IS.
They are both charged with participating in terrorist group activities. No weapons were found. According to the federal Prosecutor’s office, this new terrorism case does not have a direct link to previous ones, or the Verviers cell.
