Sharp rise in electronic tagging in Wallonia and Brussels

891 people were electronically monitored in Wallonia and Brussels in the past 12 months, 17% more than last year, according to newspapers from the Sudpresse group on Friday. Most of those wearing an electronic tagging device were men (93.5%).

“There have been 16.62% more cases of electronic tagging in the past 12 months. This is a considerable hike given the fact that electronic tagging was already on the rise in the previous 4 years,” explains Vanessa Despiegelaere, from the office of Rachid Madrane in charge of prisons.

If tagging suspension is not taken into account, at least 1,800 people were given an electronic tagging device in the first 8 months of the year, compared to 1,544 for the same period in 2014.
