The number of crimes at ATMs in Belgium fell by half between 2010 and 2014. It went from 1,567 to 783, according to figures provided by the Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon. He was responding to a written question from MP Barbara Pas (Vlaams Belang).
After a drop of 1,141 cases in 2011, the figures went up in 2012 (1,253) before falling again in 2013 (936) and 2014 (783).
Most of these crimes involve IT crime, and to a lesser extent theft and extortion.
Most of these crimes happen in the big cities. But small cities and ATMs outside urban zones are not totally immune.
In 2014, the number of these types of crimes in non-urban zones went from 100 to 136, according to official figures.
