Eleven minors who had been radicalised were sent to Public Institutes for the Protection of the Youth (IPPJs) last year, reveals Vanessa Despiegelaere, spokesperson for the office of the Minister for Youth Rachid Madrane, in Sudpresse group newspapers on Thursday. There are currently four boys in IPPJs because of radicalisation. But a total of eleven teenagers, nine boys and two girls, were taken into care “because they are suspected of being dangerously radicalised and of being close to terror groups.” Their stay can last between two and twenty months depending on the rulings by juvenile court judges.
It costs between 40 and 50,000 euros per year to place a youth in care according to the Youth Office. “You must remember that the Youth Office takes charge of at least 40,000 youths every year for at last one day each. This figure helps us understand the cost of dealing with radicalised youths,” adds the office of the Minister for Youth in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
