Courts wish to prosecute diplomat owing to Moscow contacts

The Federal Prosecutor's Office wishes to drag a consul through the courts for breach of professional secrecy and conspiracy. Following protracted investigations, Oswald G. is suspected of having worked for the Russian secret services for several years, reports the Mediahuis newspaper group on Monday.

Oswald G. is an experienced diplomat originally from Bruges. He has had positions in Tokyo, New York, Lisbon, New Delhi and Copenhagen. It was in the Danish capital in 2011 that the state security services trained their sights upon him. The information services were then informed that the diplomat was suspected of abusing his privileges by maintaining close relations with the Russian secret services.

The daily newspaper states that Oswald G. confessed to investigators that he had maintained links with the Russians However, he denies having supplied sensitive information and defends the professional nature of these links. He also denies having ever received money for his purported services.

The Federal Prosecutor has prepared an application to start proceedings. The Bruges court, sitting in chambers, will consider this case in around ten days time and decide its possible referral to the courts - a first for Belgium.
