Salah Abdeslam's barrister arrives at Brussels Criminal Court making no comment

Sven Mary, the barrister for Salah Abdeslam, arrived today at the Brussels Criminal Court for a hearing in chambers today (Thursday) around 9.00 a.m. He made no comment.

Yesterday evening, he nevertheless spoke to a Europe 1 journalist, stating that his client had not cooperated during a visit by investigators which also happened yesterday. “He wished to see me first. I would not want him to be in custody any longer for several reasons. Clearly, such custody would bring us into contact with others involved in both the Zaventem and Bataclan incidents, and perhaps it is this that I wish to avoid.”

"He is recovering slowly from his injury which was, in fact, not a serious one. He is regaining strength,” he added.

The Brussels Criminal Court in chambers must decide today whether to keep in custody not just Salah Abdeslam but also Amine Choukri, Abid Aberkane and other suspects linked to the Paris attacks. Salah Abdeslam, who was arrested on Friday in Molenbeek, was not appearing at today's hearing in person, being represented by his barrister Sven Mary. The latter was, out of necessity, seeking a time extension.
