The crime rate in young people has fallen over the last five years...thanks to the internet

Less and less young people are appearing in front of youth judges, according to a study of the annual figures from the public ministries. The Het Nieuwsblad, De Standaard and Het Belang van Limburg reported on this story on Saturday. Experts claim young people haven’t become better behaved, just lazier.

Around 83,000 cases were dealt with in 2010, compared to ‘only’ 57,160 last year. That’s a 30% drop in 5 years.

Experts say the main reason for this drop is computers, smartphones and Facebook.

“Young people are not going out in the evening any more”, explains Ellen Van Dael, a statistics expert for the Prosecutor’s office. “They are staying in front of their computer on Facebook, which means they are committing fewer crimes”.
