The suspect who on Tuesday morning was carrying a fake explosives belt on rue Neuve in Brussels and who declared having been kidnapped, admitted having invented the kidnapping, stated the Prosecutor’s Office of Brussels. During a visit at the home of the suspect’s mother, police found remains of material employed in the fabrication of the fake belt, which contained biscuits and salt.
The man, born in 1990, declared to police that he had been kidnapped in a car and dropped off at rue Neuve, in Brussels, with an explosives belt. The suspect described the vehicle in which he had presumably been kidnapped. This vehicle was found at Schaerbeek and its driver arrested. The latter was later freed. The suspect did in fact admit to have randomly chosen a licence plate on the street.
The Brussels Prosecutor’s Office obtained from an instructive judge the charge of “false information concerning the threat of an attack” and called for an arrest warrant, as well as for psychiatric assessment. The instructive judge has 24 hours from the moment of the arrest of the suspect to make a decision.
