Ram-raiding attack in Ghent: the suspect that fell into the Lys is dead

An individual suspected of being the perpetrator of a ramshackle attack against a Ghent jewelry shop on Monday night died after falling into the Lys, the Belga agency told a good source. The information was confirmed by the Ghent section of the East Flanders prosecutor's office. The circumstances of the death have yet to be established.

The attack occurred around 03:00 am and targeted the Foulon jewelery store, located in the commercial street Langemunt. The road was closed and the federal police laboratory went to the scene. "The police quickly intervened and a few shots were fired. In the interest of the investigation, we can not provide any additional information", said Caroline Jonckers, spokesman for the prosecution.

One suspect ended up in the Lys, requiring intervention from divers. After being resuscitated, the individual was taken to the hospital. The prosecutor confirmed on Tuesday afternoon the death of this suspect, without providing further details. "The reasons why he fell into the water and the circumstances surrounding his death have yet to be established," said Jonckers. A forensic pathologist has been appointed. The identity of the suspect is not yet known.
