Disappearance of Jihane in Anderlecht - the suspect provides little clarification for the facts and the motive for his act

Aurel C., the Romanian national with whom Jihane EL Oizi (6) was found on Monday after going missing the day before in Anderlecht, has provided little clarification on the facts or the reasons for his act, his lawyers said on Friday. According to his own words, Aurel C. wanted to help Jihane, who was lost but did not trust the Belgian police. The man appeared this Friday before the chamber of the council and his lawyers did not ask for his release.

"Our client stated that he only wanted to help Jihane because she was lost, thinking that she was a Romanian girl and that he did not trust the police. His goal was to take the child to the Romanian embassy but he does not say why he waited so long to do so", Mr Ayaya, one of his lawyers, said.

Aurel C. would not explain why he dressed the girl in different clothes or why he shaved his beard and hair. He did not provide further explanations on his Facebook profile, which includes pictures of half-naked girls and religious quotes. He also did not indicate what he did with the child, according to his lawyers.

Aurel C. and Jihane had spoken to each other but he did not reveal the contents of these conversations to his lawyers. The result of the searches conducted at his home is not yet known. It is also unclear whether the man has a legal history in Romania. The investigating judge ordered a psychological and psychiatric assessment of Aurel C.
