Suspect arrested in Romania in connection with Sofie Muylle's death in Knokke

A 23-year-old Romanian man was arrested on Monday afternoon in his country of birth in connection with the death of Sofie Muylle in Knokke. The information, which comes from Romanian media, was confirmed this Wednesday morning by the Bruges department of the West Flanders prosecutor's office.

The body of Sofie Muylle was discovered at midday on January 22 on the beach, below the terrace of a brewery in Knokke. The autopsy revealed that the young woman had died of violent death the night before.

We know that the victim spent part of the night with her companion in a cafe in Knokke. She then left the institution alone. But her last hours remain blurred.

The images of the surveillance cameras show a man wearing a blue jacket prowling around her body, images corroborated by witnesses. It is still unclear how Alexandru C. attracted the attention of the investigators. But photos published on his Facebook profile show him wearing a blue jacket similar to the one in the images. Moreover, the man asserts that he lives in Knokke-Heist.

He was arrested in Salcea, northeastern Romania, as part of a European arrest warrant issued by the investigating judge in charge of the case.

"The public prosecutor's office is requesting that it be handed over to Belgium so that additional investigative duties can be carried out, including DNA analysis", prosecutor Céline D'havé said. In the interests of the investigation, the public prosecutor does not wish to comment further on the information.

It is not known whether Alexandru C. is opposed to his surrender to Belgium. According to the Romanian media, the competent court will rule within 15 days.
