650 fines for driving too slow are handed out every year

The police hand out 650 fines for driving too slow every year, according to the Open VLD MP Sabien Lahaye-Battheu. He had asked the Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon (New Flemish Alliance) for figures.

According to the Minister’s figures, around 150 fines are handed out to drivers going too slow on the motorway (under 70 km/h) every year.

The 500 other fines are for not respecting the part of the Highway Code which says that “no driver must hold up other vehicles by driving at an abnormally slow speed for no reason”.

The MP said he was happy that speeding drivers are not the only ones being penalised, as “driving too slowly is also dangerous”.
