An application by Martino T., the man suspected of ordering the murder of Silvio Aquino, to have the Belgian State end his "inhuman conditions" of detention in the Louvain prison has been granted, according to his attorney, Koen Vaneecke. “The Belgian State has to pay my client 250 euros a day if the decision is not respected," Vaneecke was quoted as saying in Friday’s edition of Het Beland van Limburg newspaper. Martino T has been in prison since 26 January 2016, including 18 months in solitary confinement.
On June 30, a bailiff served Justice Minister Koen Geens with a notification of the application to have Martino’s solitary confinement ended and the case was heard on August 3. “The judge suspended my client’s regime of individual detention for one month, on pain of a penalty of 250 euros per day,” Vaneecke said. Since then, Martino has the same conditions of detention as the other inmates of Louvain prison.
Silvio Aquino was killed on 27 August 2015 in Opglabeek, when the car in which he was travelling along with his wife, Silvia Liskova, was surrounded by many other vehicles and a shootout ensued in what has been described as a settling of scores. At the time, the Aquino clan was scheduled to answer charges related to the importation and distribution of drugs.
