The Correctional Court of Leuven on Tuesday issued suspended prison sentences to two persons responsible for a January 2014 fire at a residence, in which two young Irish students died. The Leuven Institute for Ireland in Europe, which rented the rooms to the students, was fined 60,000 euros, half of it suspended. Both the institute and the two accused were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter through carelessness.
Malachy V. (72), an Irishman living in Leuven, was the owner of the student residence rented by the Leuven Institute. He was given a suspended sentence of one year in prison and ordered to pay a fine of 6,000 euros, half of it suspended.
Shane B. (22), an Irishman from the county of Offaly, caused the fire with a cigarette. He was given a suspended sentence of three months and a fine of 600 euros, half of it suspended.
