For several months now, the justice department has been following an interesting new lead to help find those responsible for the Brabant killings. “Investigators received both general and specific information from a family about who was involved”, the Liège General Prosecutor Christian de Valkeneer explained. “It’s an interesting lead that has to be backed up by other elements, other suspects”.
After 35 years, the identity of the Nivelles gang “giant” has been unveiled, the Het Laatste Nieuws and La Dernière Heure reported on Saturday. It was a former Gendarme from Alost who was in the Diane Group.
Het Laatste Nieuws said a member of his family contacted the Federal judicial police. “Just before he died at 61 in May 2015, he told me his secret. He was the “giant” Brabant killer”.
Prosecutor De Valkeneer refused to speak of a “confession”. His family gave us both general and specific information about his involvement. Other elements have now surfaced. The suspect has died so judicially, the case is already over for him. “In Charleroi, five detectives are still working on it.”
De Valkeneer is relieved that statute of limitation was increased to twice in 15 years to twice in 20 years in 2015. “This is proof this prolongation is useful. The gang’s last killing was on the 8th of November 1985, in Alost. Thanks to this prolongation, we can work until 2025”.
