Abdeslam trial: Defence lawyer wants charges thrown out

Defence Attorney Sven Mary said on Thursday at the Brussels Correctional Court that the charges against his client, Salah Abdeslam, should be thrown out. Abdeslam and Soufien Ayari are on trial for attempted murder in a terrorist context and illegal possession of firearms, following a shootout with police in Rue du Dries in Forest on the 15th of March 2016.

Sven Mary moved that Article 12 of the Law on the use of languages in legal matters had been violated and asked therefore that the charges against his client be declared inadmissible. He said the first court orders issued for the case were done in French by investigating judge Patrick De Coster, whereas the judge was based at the Dutch-language lower court of Brussels.

This was a procedural flaw that should lead to the case being dismissed, he argued.
