Mawda’s death: "The policeman who fired is distraught and demoralized”

"The policeman who fired is distraught and demoralized; he never wanted nor imagined that,” Mons Prosecutor General Ignacio De la Serna said on Tuesday about the death of Mawda, the little Kurdish girl killed during a chase between police and a van transporting migrants on the E42 near Maisières. He was speaking at a press conference in Mons, at which the crown prosecutor for Mons-Tournai was also present.

The prosecutors said only one shot was fired “after a dangerous 60-km chase”.

They said they had full confidence in the presiding judge and the Permanent Oversight Committee on the Police Services, in clarifying the matter.

They also stated that the autopsy done on the day of the shooting had enabled the exact cause of death to be determined. Immediately after the incident on Thursday at about 2.15, an emergency physician had said the little girl had died from a trauma to the skull, which had initially misled the prosecutor’s office.

The vehicle transporting the migrants had false Belgian license plates.
