Stib guards on strike following attack on colleagues in Beekkant

Railway security officers at the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company, STIB, stopped working on Friday after two of their colleagues were attacked at around 9.00 a.m. at the Beekkant metro station, STIB spokeswoman Françoise Ledune told Belga, conforming an earlier report in La Capitale newspaper. “Two persons went through the metro stile together,” Mrs Ledune explained. “When our officers asked to see their tickets, they attacked them, pushing them onto the stairs.”

The assailants then fled. The two security officers were taken to hospital, according to La Capitale.

The attack prompted STIB security staff to down tools and a meeting was held between unions and management.

“The office of the public prosecutor has issued a wanted notice using surveillance camera images,” STIB said. “The matter has been taken very seriously.”

Police have taken over security throughout the network.
