More than 700 Belgians changed sex last year

In 2018, 727 Belgians changed their sex, according to National Register’s figures. A year earlier, this number was "only" 110. This significant increase is mainly due to the legislation change.

Since 1 January 2018, it is no longer necessary to have undergone gender reassignment surgery to formally attest a sex change. Previously, you had to provide a medical certificate alongside the application.

Between 2010 and 2014, the number of people who changed their sex varied between 40 and 70 per year. The number then increased to 81 in 2015, 100 a year later and 110 in 2017.

Last year’s phenomenon could also be explained by VTM journalist Bo Van Spilbeek’s high-profile case, especially in the north, but also by other factors such as “Girl,” the film about a transgender person, which may have encouraged those concerned to take the plunge.
