Nearly 45,000 vehicles have personalized licence plates

In Belgium, 44,900 cars (0.85%) have a personalized license plate, according to Federal Minister of Mobility François Bellot in response to Veli Yüksel (CD&V, Flemish Christian Democrats).

Since 2014, when legislation on personalized plates was relaxed, the measure has added 26.2 million euros to the State coffers.

Seeing this success, late in 2015, the government raised the fee for a personalized plate from 1,000 to 2,000 euros. The number of new requests declined sharply, as well as the their "contribution", plunging from 6.4 million in 2015 to 3.3 million in 2017.

In December 2017, the price was lowered again to 1,000 euros, which proved to be successful. Last year, 6.008 people requested a personalized plate, which is almost the same number as in 2015.
