Woman suspected of murdering her handicapped sister

A 50-year-old woman from Turnhout in the Antwerp region has been detained on suspicion of murdering her younger handicapped sister. The suspected murder took place during the night between 28 and 29 April around 1:15 am. Antwerp’s public prosecutor office confirms the arrest of the woman.

The suspected woman herself contacted ambulance services, explaining that her sister had stumbled during a walk and fallen into the canal where she drowned, reported La Dernière Heure.

However, an autopsy shows traces of violence, revealing that the victim had been strangled before being thrown or "fallen" in the Dessel-Schoten canal. The suspected sister denies the accusations and any involvement but has been placed in pre-trial detention.

In the meantime, police are looking for witnesses who may have been close to the scene. A cyclist is believed to have cycled along the canal the same time around 1:15 am on Sunday night, and who may have seen something that could be of interest to police investigators.
