Rape broadcast on Snapchat: Victim knew her attackers

Five of the seven teens detained for gang raping a 15-year-old acquaintance are facing three months in a youth detention centre, while the two others could be dealt a prison sentence of up to 15 years.

Some of the perpetrators, aged between 13 and 18 years-old, were well acquainted with their victim, according to Belgian media.

The attackers were detained by law enforcement authorities last week, after the victim filed a complaint, according to a spokesperson for Liege’s public prosecutor office.

The events, which took place in late March in the town of Chaudfontaine, near Liege, were filmed and streamed on social media platform Snapchat.

The explicit nature of the footage, which only lasts a couple of seconds and in which, according to reports, the victim can be seen as unconscious, led to the detention of the seven perpetrators, who confessed to their actions.

The five minors were put in a youth detention centre for three months, after which a judge will asses their situation and decide if they should remain in detention.

The other two perpetrators, who had only recently turned 18, are facing a sentence of between 10 and 15 years in prison.
