“The Vlaams Blok program has crossed the safety line”

According to the Human Rights League (HRL), the 70 point Vlaams Blok immigration program, which earned Vlaams Belang’s predecessor a condemnation for racism in 2004, has been followed by successive governments over the last 20 years. La Libre Belgique and La Dernière Heure reported on it on Friday. They obtained a copy of the 2014 edition of the HRL report, which will be published in February. The Human Rights League paints a worrying picture of the Human Rights situation. Its president, Alexis Desawef, gave the example of the Flemish far right party Vlaams Blok’s 70 point program, which was published in 1992.

According to him, the list of propositions in it that have been adopted today by traditional parties is shocking. Examples are the creation of a State Secretary for Immigration, the closure of more and more centres for illegal residents or those at the end of their legal stay, collective deportations, the list of “safe” countries whose nationals are less likely to be granted asylum in Belgium, or stricter criteria for getting Belgian nationality.
