Social fraud is still a big problem

The federal social inspection service performed 15,000 checks last year, which uncovered 5,568 infractions. This is according to figures from the State Secretary against Social fraud, Bart Tommelein (Open VLD), who was asked about it on Sunday by De Zontag. Out of the 15,000 checks done, 1,658 were targeted specifically at social dumping in the construction sector.

“Around 60% of freelancers checked and 64% of unattached workers (sent temporarily to another member state in the European Union) were not within the rules”, said Bart Tommelein.

For the State Secretary, the European directive on unattached workers is at the heart of the problem. He hopes to convince Europe to give more power to its member States to fight social fraud and wants to reduce detachment periods.
