Asylum seekers – Theo Francken wants to bring in a new law on migrants

The State Secretary for Asylum and Immigration, Theo Francken (N-VA), has announced he wants to rewrite the law on migrants, which dates back to 1980. He spoke about it during an interview which was published in L’Echo on Saturday. “The law on foreigners is typically Belgian: it’s a house that has had loads of extensions added, and now no-one knows what’s what”.

One of the problems the State Secretary wants to sort out by rewriting the legislation is balancing the number of working and non-working migrants, and the number of migrants arriving and leaving.

Mr Francken is happy that French-speaking authorities have opted for an integration program, adding that he understood why the process in the South of the country is so long.

The Flemish nationalist said he is “very proud” of the support he has received from the French-speaking authorities. “I am obviously a Flemish Nationalist, and I am not going to hide it. But I am State Secretary for the whole of Belgium. I work for the entire Belgian population”.
