Prime Minister Charles Michel met with the president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, on Thursday in Brussels as well as several other leaders from West Africa for bilateral meetings organised in the margins of the European Development Days (EDD) on 7 and 8 June. Together they discussed the issues of terrorism, the future of relations between Africa and the European Union, and the issue of immigration, according to the Prime Minister's office.
While nearly 42,000 people, including several African and South American heads of state, met in Brussels at the 12th European Development Days, organised by the European Commission on the Tour & Taxis site, the Prime Minister took advantage of the opportunity to hold a series of bilateral meetings with several leaders from West Africa and Rwanda (Central Africa).
On Thursday morning, Charles Michel received the president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, the Guinean president, Alpha Condé, as well as the Senegalese President, Macky Sall at his "working" residence in Lambermont. Meetings of about thirty minutes, during which the leaders addressed various subjects of current political and bilateral relations, followed.
The leaders discussed the issues of terrorism and, in particular, the situation in Libya and Mali as well as climate change, the US President's decision to leave the Paris Agreement and the partnership with Africa in the management of immigration, according to the Prime Minister's office.
Another point raised during the meetings was the future of relations between Africa and the European Union. And more specifically, the issues of good governance, the promotion of human rights, the fight against corruption and the involvement of the private sector as a lever for development.
The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to support Belgium's bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council alongside its African counterparts.
The Premier also met with the vice president of the Ivory Coast, Daniel Kablan Duncan, and Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo on Wednesday.
