Flemish Government beefs up climate goals

The Flemish Government has decided to take 2015, instead of 2005, as the baseline year for calculating the climate efforts of its departments, which has the effect of raising its climate goals, according to a government memo presented to the various ministers on Friday. The Government of Prime Minister Geert Bourgeois maintains its aim to have the public authorities reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, and energy consumption by 27%. However, these reductions will be calculated against the year 2015, rather than 2005. The Government has been able to upgrade its goals because it has already achieved many of its objectives.
