Severance pay for the MePs amounts to 9,551 euros (gross) per month, for no more than 24 months, Le Soir reports Thursday, observing that, due to the decumulation of functions, there could be more allowances of this sort as of 2019. When they leave office, MEPs are entitled to a severance payment, for 4 to 24 months depending on the situation. Its monthly amount is equal to the payment the MEP was receiving while holding his/her office, that is 7,462 euros (gross) + 2,089 euros for expenses = 9,551 euros (gross). But this sum is fully subject to tax: taxed at 45 %, this comes down to a net salary of about 5,253 euros.
To know the total amount which he/she will perceive over several months or years, you have to multiply this amount by the number of severance pay months the MEP is entitled to. Though limited at 24 months, this severance pay, however, may run for up to 48 months for the people who were already entitled to more than 24 months in 2014, the year when the statutes were modified. This benefit cannot be perceived on top of a pension, and it is not paid as a lump sum, but in monthly installments.
So far, no outgoing MEP has asked to be paid less. On the other hand, it happened that an MEP refused his severance pay, at a time when it was a sensitive issue.
