On Saturday, Prime Minister Charles Michel wished the new Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi every success on behalf of the Belgian government. He also asked him not to ignore the Congolese population’s desire for change.
“The last few weeks have shown that the Congolese people desire change, transparency and democracy. This cannot be ignored”, the Prime Minister said in a press release.
“Seeing as there have been doubts about the election process, we hope that the next few weeks will bring progress towards inclusivity, stability and development. For the good of the Congolese population”.
The head of the government has expressed hope that Felix Tshisekedi’s “strong links” to Belgium – where he lived for a number of years – will help improve relations between the two countries. They degraded significantly during the last few years of Joseph Kabila’s presidency.
