Three parties accuse Prime Minister of abandoning his post

"Charles Michel puts the interests of Mouvement Réformateur (MR) before those of all Belgians,” cdH legislator Catherine Fonck charged on Monday, after the liberals announced that the Prime Minister would now chair the party. “Who can believe that the Federal Government can function with a party president taken up with the election campaign?” Fonck wondered on Twitter. “Is this responsible in the face of urgent matters such as climate, the AIP, health, tough professions or energy?”

Earlier on Monday, the PS and Ecolo parties had also sharply criticised the decision, saying that Michel had abandoned his post and warning of the risk of “a permanent election campaign”.

The comments came after the MR announced on Monday morning that it had decided to hand over the party presidency to Michel up to the May polls, while Olivier Chastel focuses on the European elections.
