Ecolo (Green francophone party) has proposed to make public transport free for job-seekers and persons registered at a CPAS (Centre Public d'Action Sociale), the party's co-chairman Jean-Marc Nollet indicated in today’s Sudpresse columns. Youth under 25 would also benefit from this measure, "because it’s when you’re young that you adopt good habits."
Free public transport would make it easier for the unemployed to go job-hunting," Nollet argues.
Mobility is Ecolo’s priority for 26 May elections, the ecologist said. "I want people to be able to move without their car if they wish to do so, which is unthinkable at the moment. We need to reopen bus and train stops, expand the circulation time of certain metros - as in Charleroi, for example - improve travelling conditions, with an emphasis on punctuality, etc. A large plan, estimated at seven billion euros, is necessary for Wallonia and Brussels."
"A household with a company car costs public finances 493 euros per month, against 94 euros for households using public transport (...) By cutting in half expense due to company cars, we could already finance the plan, as well as the free transport measure."
