Several thousand multi-generational participants were in today’s march for the climate in Louvain-la-Neuve, with the presence of Youth for Climate’s main leaders as well as representatives of the Catholic University of Louvain (UCLouvain), including Dean Vincent Blondel. The University Square was packed with people as the march set off, and the crowd increased along the way. The number of participants clearly exceeded the 3,000 that organizers were expecting.

Although it was feared that they would be less mobilized because of school holidays, both Francophone and Flemish-speaking secondary students were largely represented. Some displayed the teasing sign: “Climate does not take a vacation, neither do we.”

They were accompanied by university and graduate students, as well as by many older people. “Thank you youth. You speak for several generations: ours, yours and the ones to come,” a banner displayed.

Slogans were written in several languages, from the aggressive: “Wij doen al veel Wij doen genoeg” to the frankly off-beat: “I’m sure the dinosaurs thought they had time too.” The event was expected to end around 12.30 p.m.
