Climate activists will remain on Place du Trône until Tuesday’s parliamentary discussions

Climate activists who partially occupied rue de la Loi throughout Sunday evening and night have packed up. With police consent, they will continue their mobilization on Place du Trône.
The activists (300 Sunday evening), occupied the neutral zone of rue de la Loi in spite of the ban on all demonstrations on this site. Around one hundred activists spent the night outside and intend to protest until Tuesday. They demand the adoption of climate legislation under discussion in parliament.

While the political world is in turmoil around the special climate law proposal, co-signed by environmentalists, socialists, the CDH (Christian Democrats), DéFI (Democrat Federalist Independent) and the MR (Reformed Movement), it emerged last Tuesday that the MR would not support the revision of the Constitution’s Article 7a, which would be the fastest way to make this climate law possible.

The CD&V (Flemish Christian Democrats), Open VLD (Flemish Liberal Democrats) and N-VA (New Flemish Alliance) also refuse this option. The MR preferred to get there through a cooperation agreement between the country’s various entities.

The constitutional review committee will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) to decide on the revision of Article 7a. If a majority is found (which is unlikely, a 2/3 vote is necessary), the plenary session would then announce its decision on Thursday.
