Fine particles: the information phase is extended throughout the entire country

The information phase on fine particles has been extended in all three Belgian regions. This was revealed by the Interregional Environment Cell (Celine) on Saturday morning. The information phase started on Thursday. The fine particles threshold for what is acceptable quality of air in Belgium is at 50 µg/m³.

The average 24 hour concentration recorded at 8am on Saturday morning was 76 µg/m³ in Flanders, 58 in Brussels and 58 in Wallonia, Celine revealed.

“The light wind doesn’t disperse atmospheric pollutants well. Air masses from the North-East and East bring polluted air from neighbouring countries”, it added.

People suffering from breathing/heart problems or asthma and the elderly and small children are advised to avoid prolonged outdoor activity.
