Luxembourg will make use of Belgian expertise as regards storage of nuclear waste. The information was relayed by the Belgian daily, Le Soir, on Tuesday. Luxembourg has a low level of radioactive waste production, which will be stored in collaboration with Belgium.
A bilateral agreement between the two countries was signed in July 2016. Le Soir states that the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Didier Reynders, presented a bill to the government to ratify this agreement.
The text anticipates that “radioactive waste from Luxembourg...will be stored in Belgium until its disposal,” also to take place in Belgium. The government approved the text upon first reading.
The majority of Luxembourg radioactive waste has a low radioactivity, but a long lifespan. However, the daily publication emphasises that Belgium has not taken any political decision around the long-term storage of this type of waste.
