Rue Belliard cycle lanes finally ready

Rue Belliard cycle lanes finally ready

The protected cycle lanes in rue Belliard in Brussels are finally ready. There is one cycle lane going in each direction and there are now four road traffic lanes instead of five.

Planning for the cycle lanes began more than two years ago. Roadworks and private building work delayed the actual construction of the lanes, which started at the end of April.

The new cycle lanes are separated from the road by solid blocks of concrete. The new infrastructure should make bicycle traffic in the nearby rue de la Loi more fluid, as it had been overcrowded.

Brussels mobility minister Pascal Smet (sp.a), Brussels mayor Philippe Close (PS) and Brussels city councillor Bart Dhondt (Groen) opened the new lanes on Friday afternoon.

Rue Belliard is heavily used by commuters, however tests have shown that reducing rue Belliard to four lanes from five shouldn’t cause any extra traffic jams.
