Companies are recalling an increasing number of products distributed in supermarkets in a bid to protect their brand image. According to figures released by SPF Economie in an article published by the press (De Morgen) on Thursday, between 2010 and 2013, the number of products taken off the shelves nearly doubled, jumping from 110 to 190. And the upward trend is continuing this year with 186 products having already been recalled in the first eight months of 2014. 2014 might therefore end as a record year for products being withdrawn.
According to SPF Economie, these recalls are voluntary and not down to to external monitoring. Electrical appliances, sporting and leisure goods, and toys are the product categories recalled the most frequently.
