On Monday, the American social network Facebook announced it was adding a video call function to its mobile messaging service Messenger. The new option will be available in several countries, including the United States, Canada, France, and Belgium.
“Video calls will add to the existing real-time communication functions in Messenger, allowing the more than 600 million people who use Messenger every month to contact other users from anywhere”, Facebook said on its Internet site.
Video calls can be started within any Messenger conversation, by pressing an icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
It will still function if one of the two correspondents is using an Android device, the Google mobile operating system used by several smartphones builders, and the other an iPhone from its rival Apple.
The new function was launched in 18 countries on Monday, and Facebook has promised to extend it to other areas of the world “in the next few months”.
Facebook is currently working hard to develop Messenger. Before video calls, it added a voice call function and an option to send money to friends through the app. Last month, it also announced the platform would be opened to exterior application developers, and is trying to encourage online trade websites to use it.
